What is VTuber?

A VTuber (short for 'Virtual YouTuber') is a content creator or streamer who performs using a virtual avatar — 2D or 3D — instead of showing their real face. The avatar is driven in real time by face and motion tracking, so it mirrors the creator's expressions and movements while they stream or record.

The term originated in Japan and was popularized around 2016 by Kizuna AI. Since then VTubing has grown into a global phenomenon across YouTube, Twitch, and other platforms, spanning solo creators and large agencies. VTubers cover the same range of content as any streamer — gaming, chatting, music, education — but with a persistent avatar persona.

Technically, a VTuber needs three things: an avatar, tracking software, and a capture setup. A webcam (or an iPhone with ARKit) reads the creator's facial movements; VTuber software maps that onto the avatar's blendshapes and bones; and a tool like OBS captures the result for streaming. 2D VTubers typically use Live2D models or PNGtuber images, while 3D VTubers use VRM avatars.

Getting started used to mean either learning 3D software or paying for a custom commission. Today you can generate a 3D VRM avatar from a single selfie with VTubeMe, load it into a free app like VSeeFace or Warudo, and be live in minutes — no drawing or modeling required.

VTuber — FAQ

What does VTuber mean?
VTuber is short for 'Virtual YouTuber' — a creator who streams or makes videos using a virtual avatar instead of their real face, with the avatar animated in real time by face and motion tracking.
Do you need to show your face to be a VTuber?
No. The whole point of VTubing is that your avatar represents you on screen, so you can create content without revealing your real face.
What do I need to become a VTuber?
An avatar (2D or 3D), tracking software (like VSeeFace or Warudo), a webcam, and capture software (like OBS). With VTubeMe you can create a 3D VRM avatar from a selfie and be ready in minutes.
What's the difference between a 2D and 3D VTuber?
2D VTubers use flat illustrations animated with Live2D (or static PNGtuber images). 3D VTubers use full 3D models, usually in VRM format, which allow head turns, body movement, and more depth.
