What is Live2D?
Live2D is a technology and software for animating 2D illustrations so they appear to move in a lifelike, almost-3D way — without being a true 3D model. It's the most common way to make a 2D VTuber avatar, splitting an artwork into layered parts that are warped and shifted in real time to follow the creator's face.
With Live2D, an artist draws a character and separates it into many movable pieces (eyes, mouth, hair strands, and so on). A process called rigging then defines how those pieces deform when the creator moves. Tracking software reads the webcam and drives the rig, producing smooth blinking, lip-sync, head tilts, and subtle body sway — all from flat artwork. Apps like VTube Studio are built specifically for Live2D models.
The key distinction from VRM is dimensionality. Live2D is fundamentally 2D: it fakes depth convincingly but can't truly rotate the character in 3D space. VRM avatars are true 3D models, so they can turn fully, be viewed from different angles, and work in 3D scenes — at the cost of a different (often more photorealistic or stylized-3D) look.
Neither is strictly better — they're different styles. Live2D excels at hand-drawn, anime-style charm; 3D VRM excels at full movement and flexibility. VTubeMe focuses on the 3D side: it turns a selfie into a photorealistic VRM avatar, which is a different aesthetic from a Live2D model and works in 3D VTuber apps like VSeeFace and Warudo.
