Free online 3DS viewer

Drop a .3ds with its texture images, the folder, or a .zip. Meshes and materials are drawn in your browser — no 3ds Max, and nothing is uploaded.

How to open a 3DS file

  1. Drop the .3ds together with its textures: select the model and the images, drop the folder, or drop the .zip from the model library you downloaded it from.
  2. Orbit and zoom. The model is assumed Z-up, as 3D Studio was; press the Z-up / Y-up button if this one was written by a tool that did otherwise.
  3. Read the panel: objects, triangles and materials, and the texture list with found or missing beside each name. Names are matched without regard to upper and lower case.

A format from the DOS era, and its limits

.3ds is the native format of Autodesk 3D Studio for DOS, from the early 1990s. It outlived the program by decades because every model library of the 2000s shipped it, and those archives are where most .3ds files come from today. It is not the same as .max, the scene file of 3ds Max, which only 3ds Max can read.

The age shows in what it can store. A mesh is limited to 65,536 vertices and as many faces. Faces are triangles only. Each vertex has one UV. Normals are not stored — shading comes from smoothing groups. Texture file names follow the DOS 8.3 rule, twelve characters with the dot, which is why they are so often WOOD_01.JPG in capitals while the file on your disk is wood_01.jpg.

For avatars: .3ds has no skeleton and no skin weights, so a character in this format is a statue. It cannot be converted to a working VRM.

What this viewer does not do

It reads meshes, material colours, shininess, transparency and four kinds of texture map: diffuse, bump, opacity and specular. It skips the keyframe section, so object animation and the hierarchy that animation defines are not shown, along with cameras and lights. Smoothing groups are not used: normals are recomputed from the triangles, which can make hard edges look soft or the reverse. The format gives no dependable unit, so sizes are in the file’s own numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a .3ds file without 3ds Max?

Drop it here. The file is parsed in the browser, on any system. Blender stopped bundling its .3ds importer in version 4.2 — it is now a separate extension you install — so a browser viewer is often the quickest way to see what a downloaded model is.

The model opens without textures. Why?

The images are separate files, and the .3ds only knows their names — truncated to the old 8.3 length. Drop them with the model. The panel lists each name the file asks for; if one reads missing, look for a file whose name starts the same way, since exporters shortened long names when writing.

Is .3ds the same as .max?

No. .max is the working scene of 3ds Max and can only be opened by 3ds Max. .3ds is the older exchange format that Max can still export. This page reads .3ds; a .max file has to be exported from Max first.

Why are parts of my model missing or split?

Large models are split by the exporter into pieces of at most 65,536 vertices, because the format's indices are 16-bit. They are still all there, as separate objects — the object count in the panel shows how many. Truly missing parts usually mean the file was produced by a converter that dropped them.

What scale is the model in?

The format does not say in a way tools agree on. A model made in inches and one made in metres look the same in the file. The panel gives the bounding box in file units; decide the scale when you import it into your own scene.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Model and textures are read from your disk and drawn in your browser. Missing textures are not fetched from the network.

Can I use a .3ds character as a VTuber avatar?

Not as it is. An avatar needs bones and skin weights, and .3ds cannot store them. The mesh would have to be rigged in Blender or through an auto-rigger first, exported as FBX or GLB, and converted to VRM from there.

Holding a newer format?

Rigged and animated models come as FBX, glTF or Collada, and each has a page here: the FBX viewer, the GLB viewer and the DAE viewer. A rigged FBX can go on to become an avatar through the FBX to VRM converter.
